What is a Medical Emergency?

A medical emergency is where a person – an adult or child - is affected by an illness or injury which requires immediate medical attention. Depending on the type of medical emergency, treatment can be administered by a person with first aid training, an ambulance technician or a qualified nurse or doctor, similar to those who work at the Urgent Care Scottsdale center. Medical emergencies pose an immediate threat or risk to the victim and can occur at any time and in any place. Read on for some medical emergencies that can occur in different settings.

Home

While you may believe your home is a safe haven for you and your family, a large number of medical emergencies occur in the home. From slips, trips and falls to poisoning and burns, there are many things that can happen in the home, some of which will require an immediate response. For this reason, it is worth having some first aid training in order to be prepared for such events.

School

Medical emergencies that occur at schools can involve the pupils, staff members or visitors. Therefore, it is important that a school has an adequately trained first aid responder or school nurse on site at all times. Medical emergencies that can occur in school include accidents in the yard, choking, seizures and allergic reactions.

Workplace

Workplace medical emergencies are also extremely common. For this reason, the majority of workplaces will have occupational first aid responders, trained users of defibrillators and first aid kits on the site or premises at all times. Medical emergencies at the workplace include cardiac arrest, fainting, head trauma and broken bones.

While the occurrence of a medical emergency cannot be predicted, you can minimize its effect by remaining calm and collected when one does occur. Carry out any first aid training which you may have and make contact with medical personnel as quickly as possible.
